Secretariat
“Few names in horse racing are as iconic as Secretariat. Born on March 30, 1970, this chestnut Thoroughbred, known as Big Red, would go on to become one of the most revered horses in the history of the sport. His career was filled with record-breaking performances, memorable victories, and an impact that remains etched in the minds of racing fans. Secretariat was foaled at Meadow Stable in Caroline County, Virginia and was bred by Christopher Chenery, the owner of the stable. However, it was Chenery’s daughter, Penny Chenery, who would take the reins of Secretariat’s career after her father became ill. Secretariat’s sire, Bold Ruler, was a successful racehorse in his own right, having been the leading sire in North America several times. His dam, Somethingroyal, also came from a strong lineage. While his pedigree was promising, no one could have predicted the dominance that Secretariat would later display on the racetrack. As a yearling, Secretariat stood out with his imposing physique and balanced proportions, traits that would serve him well during his racing career.

He completed the race in a time of 1:59 2/5, breaking the previous record and becoming the first horse to run the Derby in under two minutes. His final quarter-mile was his fastest, a rare accomplishment that left spectators and experts alike in awe.
Preakness Stakes
Two weeks later, Secretariat won the Preakness Stakes. His official time for this race was long disputed, with the original clock showing 1:55, but a later review confirmed that he actually ran the race in 1:53, setting a new record for the Preakness as well.
Belmont Stakes
On June 9, 1973, Secretariat cemented his legendary status with a performance at the Belmont Stakes that is widely considered one of the greatest moments in horse racing history. He won by an astonishing 31 lengths, finishing the race in a time of 2:24, which shattered the world record for 1.5 miles on dirt. To this day, no horse has come close to beating this time or winning by such a large margin.
